Learning Africa offers teachers in the UK teaching and learning resources and activities based on the key themes and recommendations highlighted by the Commission for Africa.

The site provides learning activities, case studies, additional resources, and links to support classroom teaching, which draw on and develop the secondary school poster set that has been produced on six key themes.

Africa True False Quiz
A self correcting true / false quiz from Leeds Development Education Centre based on the facts and figures from the Commission for Africa report and common misunderstandings about Africa. The activity is a good starting point for young people to question the perceptions and assumptions they have about Africa and introduce the themes of the report. The Commission for Africa report aims to raise awareness of the need for international action to eliminate poverty in Africa and support the continent’s development.

African Connections
This map based activity from Leeds Development Education Centre explores the trading connections between the UK and the rest of the world. It uses clothes and manufactured goods that young people bring to the class and food products their families purchase at their local supermarket.

The activity is suitable for the whole of the secondary age range and the discussion generated by the activity can be adjusted to the ability of the class.

The Commission for Africa report highlights the need for African countries to increase their income through trade. This activity demonstrates that currently African countries are mainly producers of raw materials and primary products whereas the majority of higher value manufactured goods come from Europe and the Far East.
