This page provides summaries
of secondary school classroom activities which explore the issues related
to Peace and security. A link to the full
details of each activity is also provided and this is in pdf format.
The activities draw on and develop issues raised through the secondary
school poster set and a series of case studies. Unless otherwise
stated, the activities have been developed by Leeds
Development Education Centre
Conflict Resources
An activity which uses the case study: The
exploitation of natural resources and war in the Democratic Republic
of Congo (141KB) to
explore how
natural resources are being fought over and the income from their
sale is being used to continue the conflict. Through the activity
young people examine the complexity of the problem and are encouraged
to try and find solutions. The Commission for Africa are keen to
find solutions to conflict across the continent so that the process
of building stable and prosperous economics can proceed uninterrupted.
The activity is suitable for the upper end of the secondary age range
and the discussion generated by the activity can be adjusted to the
ability of the class. Click
here for full details of the activity (85KB).
Emma’s Story
A sorting activity that uses the case study Emma’s
Story (115KB) to explore the Rights of the Child. After reading the story
the pupils have to group a selection of Children’s Rights and decide which
of these rights were denied to Emma. The Commission for Africa stress the need
to involve those groups that are usually marginalised, such as women and young
people, in democratic processes and in the process of development.
This activity has been designed as a primary classroom activity but
is also appropriate for lower secondary. Click
here for full details of the activity (58KB).
