Growth and Poverty Reduction summary

The Commission for Africa has identified that poverty will not be reduced unless African countries have strong economic growth and are able to encourage investment. By developing their infrastructure African countries could encourage investment and increase the capacity of the African people to sustain themselves.

Proposed Solutions

• Donors to fund a doubling of spending on infrastructure – rural roads, small-scale irrigation, regional highways, railways, larger power projects and ICT.
• Growth policies to actively include the poorest groups with special focus given to women and young people.
• An emphasis on the growth of agriculture and small enterprises.
• Growth to be sustainable – safeguarding the environment and addressing risks of climate change.
