This page provides summaries of secondary school classroom activities which explore the issues related to Resources. A link to the full details of each activity is also provided and this is in pdf format.

The activities draw on and develop issues raised through the secondary school poster set and a series of case studies. Unless otherwise stated, the activities have been developed by Leeds Development Education Centre

It’s a Mystery
An activity in which pairs of young people explore the impacts of 'conditionality' imposed on the poorest countries in Africa by the International Monetary Fund. Students investigate what happens to someone in an African country before and after an application for a loan from the IMF. The class discussion which follows this makes the link between individual circumstances and national agreements with the IMF. The Commission for Africa report recognises the need for assistance from international institutions such as the IMF but request that their support be directed more towards alleviating poverty and supporting the development of the continent.

The activity is suitable for the upper end of the secondary age range and the discussion generated by the activity can be adjusted to the ability of the class. Click here for full details of the activity (85KB).

Debt Solutions
An activity in which young people have to research the question: ‘Who is doing what to reduce the debt?’ This research is used in class to evaluate a number of possible solutions to the debt crisis and to decide which they think is the best option. The level of debt repayments is highlighted by the Commission for Africa report as being one of the financial restrictions that is holding back many of the poorest African countries. A cancellation of debt repayments would allow African countries to invest more in their people and economy.

The activity is suitable for the upper end of the secondary age range and the discussion generated by the activity can be adjusted to the ability of the class. Click here for full details (81KB).
