Resources summary

The Commission for Africa has identified that substantial increases in the quantity and quality of aid together with the cancellation of debts are needed if Africa’s rate of development is to be increased. Debt cancellation would enable African countries to spend more on social and economic development while improved aid commitments would enable development priorities to be met.

Proposed Solutions

• An additional US$25billion per year to be contributed by donor countries to fund Africa’s development.
• Donor countries to provide aid which is more predictable and untied.
• The IMF and World Bank to give higher priority to Africa’s development and give Africa a stronger voice in decision making.
• Rich nations to commit to giving 0.7% of their annual income in aid.
• For poor countries in sub-Saharan Africa there must be 100% debt cancellation.
